Mini-Z Transmitter Settings: Dual Rate, EPA, Expo, and Trim

What every Mini-Z transmitter setting actually does, a baseline you can start from, and how radio setup interacts with your gyro and servo.

You bought a real transmitter, bound it to the car, and the steering still feels wrong. Either the car darts at the smallest thumb input, or you run out of steering halfway through a hairpin, or the gyro seems to be fighting you. The chassis is not the problem. The radio is still set up the way it came out of the box, and out of the box is not a setup.

Radio configuration is the cheapest tuning you will ever do on a Mini-Z. It costs nothing, it takes about ten minutes, and it changes the car more than most $40 parts. The Transmitter Guide covers which radio to buy. This one covers what to do with it once it is in your hands.

Trim and Subtrim Are Not Tuning

You set the car on the track, let go of the wheel, and it drifts left. Most people reach for the trim lever, click it four times to the right, and drive on. That works, but it burns trim range you will want later, and it hides a mechanical problem.

Trim and subtrim do the same thing electrically. The difference is intent. Subtrim is the permanent zero point, set once during setup so the wheels are actually straight at neutral. The trim lever is the field adjustment for when something shifts during a heat.

The right order is mechanical, then subtrim, then trim. Straighten the steering physically first. If a knuckle took a hit or the servo horn is off a spline, no amount of trim fixes the underlying asymmetry, and you end up with more steering in one direction than the other. Then zero it in subtrim, and leave the trim lever centered so you have full range in both directions mid-session.

Dual Rate: The Setting That Changes the Most

You are turning into a medium-speed corner, you make a small correction, and the car snaps sideways. Your instinct is that the car has too much front grip or the gyro is set wrong. More often it is that 100% of your steering range is compressed into a wheel you can turn with one finger.

Dual rate scales your entire steering output proportionally. At 100%, full wheel travel produces full servo travel. At 70%, it produces 70% of it. The car does not turn more slowly. It turns less per unit of thumb movement, so your inputs land where you meant them instead of overshooting.

Beginners leave dual rate at 100% and drive twitchy cars. Fast club racers usually run between 70% and 85% on RCP once tires and bearings are sorted. If you have never touched it, drop to 85% and run a pack. If the car feels calmer and you are not running out of steering in the tightest corner on the layout, drop another 5% and repeat until you do run out. Then go back up one step.

The exception is a low-grip surface. On slick hardwood or dusty carpet where the car is sliding anyway, high dual rate is easier to live with because you need the extra angle to catch it.

Expo: Softening the Center Without Losing the Ends

You have dual rate where you want it, the car is calm on entry, and now it feels lazy through the fastest corner on the track. You want less response near center and the same amount at full lock. Dual rate cannot do that, because it scales everything at once. Expo can.

Expo changes the shape of the curve between your input and the servo output. Negative expo (the softening direction, though brands label it inconsistently, so confirm on your radio) reduces sensitivity around neutral while preserving full travel at the ends. Small corrections get gentler, big steering inputs stay exactly as they were.

Ten to twenty percent is a sensible starting range for Mini-Z. It helps most on fast, flowing layouts where you are making constant small corrections at speed. It helps least on tight technical tracks where you are near full lock most of the lap. Expo is a feel setting, not a lap time setting, so change it, drive a full pack, and be honest about whether the car is actually easier or just different.

EPA: Endpoints and the Damage You Cannot Hear

Your servo makes a faint buzzing sound at full lock, or the steering feels notchy at one extreme. That is the servo driving the steering into its own mechanical stop and holding there, drawing current, generating heat, and slowly chewing gears.

EPA (End Point Adjustment) sets the maximum travel at each end independently. Unlike dual rate, it is a mechanical safety limit, not a tuning lever. Set it once: turn to full lock, back the endpoint off until the servo stops just before the linkage binds, then repeat separately for the other side. Independent adjustment matters, because a car that has been crashed a few times rarely has identical travel in both directions.

Do not use EPA in place of dual rate for feel. Reducing EPA to calm the car down permanently caps the steering available for slide recovery and for the gyro.

Throttle Side: EPA, Curve, and Brake

Throttle EPA has two real uses on a Mini-Z. The first is taming a motor that is too much for the track. If you have a low turn brushed motor or a brushless setup on a small RCP layout, capping forward throttle at 70% or 80% gives you usable resolution across the whole trigger instead of tiptoeing across the first quarter of it. That is more precise than trying to feather it.

The second is brake and reverse. Most Mini-Z ESCs treat the reverse direction as brake, then reverse. Set that endpoint so you get real slowing without locking the rear and spinning the car. If you race a class with reverse disabled, set it to whatever the club rules specify and leave it.

Throttle curve is worth a look on a high powered car where the first third of the trigger delivers most of the punch. On a stock motor it is usually unnecessary.

How This Interacts With the Gyro and Servo

Your gyro commands steering corrections through the same servo and the same travel limits you just configured. Cutting dual rate or EPA aggressively also cuts the authority the gyro has to catch the rear stepping out. A gyro that suddenly feels weak after a radio session is usually not a gain problem. It is a travel problem.

A Baseline You Can Start From

Not a setup, just a place to begin on a medium-grip RCP layout with a stock or mild motor:

Change one thing per pack. Radio settings are seductive precisely because they are free and instant, which makes it easy to change four at once and learn nothing.

Put It On Your Setup Sheet

Radio settings belong on the sheet next to springs and tires. A borrowed setup sheet that lists T-plate and camber but not dual rate is missing a variable that changes the car more than either. What to Buy

You cannot do most of this on a bundled ReadySet transmitter. Stock radios typically have trim and little else: no per model memory, no expo, often no meaningful dual rate. That is the actual argument for upgrading, not range or looks.
