When It’s a Rebuild, Not a Preload Tweak
The test is simple: hold one output shaft still and turn the other by hand. A healthy ball diff resists like a firm pinch between your thumb and forefinger, smooth and even through the full turn. If the resistance is gritty, if it catches unevenly at certain points in the rotation, or if adjusting the preload nut doesn’t change how it actually behaves on track, the diff needs to come apart. What’s Actually Inside the Cup
A Mini-Z ball diff is simpler than it looks once it’s apart: two output halves, a ring of steel balls caged between them, thrust washers on either side that the balls press against, a spring, and a preload nut that squeezes the whole stack together. Friction between the balls and the thrust washers is the entire mechanism. Clean and properly greased, that friction is consistent and predictable. Contaminated or dry, it’s neither, which is why a dirty diff feels different every time you touch the preload.
Getting the Diff Out of the Pod
Remove the motor pod screws and separate the case halves to access the diff assembly. Lift it out as one complete unit before you touch the preload nut. This matters more than it sounds like it should: small hardware from the pod (screws, spacers, sometimes a shim) looks identical from side to side but often isn’t interchangeable. Set it into a divided tray or two small cups, one per side, before you move on.
Opening the Cup Without Losing Parts
Back the preload nut all the way off and lift away the spring. Note which direction the cup is facing before you separate the halves; ball diffs go back together the same way they came apart, and getting the orientation backwards changes how the preload behaves even with identical parts. Ease the two halves apart over a small parts tray. The balls are loose the moment the cup opens, and a lentil-sized steel ball that rolls off the workbench and under a shelf is gone for good.
What Worn Parts Actually Look Like
Roll each ball between your fingers and look for a flat spot or a dull, matte patch where a shiny surface should be. Check the ring and both thrust washers for scoring, grooves, or a glazed, shiny look that wasn’t there when they were new. Any of those signs means that part is done. Clean, Regrease, Reassemble
Drop the cup halves, the ring, the balls, and the thrust washers into isopropyl alcohol and work the old grease off with a fingertip or a small brush. Old diff grease has picked up dust and grit over however many sessions it’s been in the car, and reusing it just reintroduces the same contamination you’re trying to remove. Let every part dry completely.
Apply a thin, even coat of fresh diff grease to the ball ring and both thrust faces. This is the step people get wrong in both directions. Too little and the balls run dry almost immediately. Too much and the excess grease acts like a cushion, absorbing preload instead of transmitting it, which makes the diff feel inconsistent even right after a rebuild. Setting Preload After a Rebuild
Thread the preload nut down against the spring pack gradually, a partial turn at a time, checking resistance with the same pinch test after each adjustment. Platform Notes
On the MR-03 and MR-04, you’re servicing one rear diff and the process above is the whole job. The MA-020 doubles the work because you have front and rear diffs interacting with each other. The front diff on an AWD car takes more punishment on tight, high-grip RCP than the rear does, because it’s working constantly to let the car rotate through corners rather than just managing drive off the exit. Check the MA-020 front diff on a shorter interval than the rear, and don’t assume that because the rear feels fine, the front is also fine. It usually isn’t.
If You’re Running a Gear Diff Instead
This whole procedure is ball-diff specific. Don’t apply this rebuild schedule to a gear diff. Gear diffs are sealed units that mostly need a grease top-off through the fill point, not a full teardown, and they don’t hold preload the same way a ball diff does.
