How to Paint a Mini-Z Lexan Body Without Ruining It

Painting a clear Mini-Z shell from the inside: mold release prep, masking, light PS coats, backing color, and trimming without cracking the polycarbonate.

You bought a clear shell because the painted catalog bodies never come in the livery you actually want, and now it is sitting on your bench and you are a little afraid of it. That is the right instinct. A Mini-Z shell is thin and unforgiving, and the two most common first-attempt outcomes are paint that peels off in sheets and a cracked post hole that ruins an otherwise perfect job in the last five minutes.

Neither is a skill problem. They are process problems, and the process is short.

Lexan Gets Painted From the Inside

If you have only ever painted models or hard-body kits, this is the part that trips you up: a clear polycarbonate shell is painted on the inside surface, not the outside.

The clear plastic itself becomes the gloss coat. That is why a well-painted lexan body looks deep and wet with no clear coat applied at all, and why the paint survives contact with a barrier when a hard-body finish would have scuffed to primer. Paint on the outside will not last one club night. It also means you work in reverse: the first color you spray is the color that ends up on top.

Use Polycarbonate Paint, Not What Is In the Garage

You are standing in front of a shelf of spray cans and the cheap enamel is a third of the price of the RC-specific stuff. Buy the RC-specific stuff.

Polycarbonate flexes. Standard enamel and lacquer either refuse to bond to it or chemically attack the surface and craze it into a spiderweb you cannot undo. Paint formulated for lexan stays flexible and bonds without eating the plastic.

The Prep Step Everyone Skips

Your paint went on beautifully, dried overnight, and then lifted off the inside of the shell in a sheet when you peeled the window masks. That is mold release, every time.

Every clear shell ships coated in an invisible release agent, whatever the brand, and paint cannot bond through it. The fix takes five minutes:

  1. Wash the inside in warm water with a drop of dish soap. Use your fingertips, not a cloth or brush, because polycarbonate scratches easily and every scratch inside shows through the outside.
  2. Rinse fully. Soap residue is just a second contaminant.
  3. Let it dry completely. Trapped water in a corner will bloom under paint.
  4. Wipe the interior with isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth as a final degrease.

After that, stop touching the inside with bare fingers. Skin oil is the second-most-common adhesion failure.

Leave the protective film on the outside through this entire process, including trimming. It catches overspray and bench scratches, and it comes off last.

Masking Windows and Livery

Most Kyosho clear shells include pre-cut window masks in the bag. Use them, they are shaped to the shell and save an hour. If yours did not come with them, lay tape over the outside, trace the window frame lines with a fine pen, and cut on a mat.

What matters more than the shape is burnishing. Press every mask edge down hard with a fingernail or a toothpick. Polycarbonate is smooth enough that a tape edge merely sitting on the surface will let paint wick underneath, and a fuzzy window edge is the tell that separates a home job from a clean one.

For multi-color liveries, mask progressively: spray, cure, mask over it, spray the next. Tamiya’s 6mm and 10mm tape follows curves better than hardware-store tape and does not lift cured PS paint.

Spraying: Light Passes, Then a Backing Coat

You are impatient, the shell is small, and one good heavy pass would cover it. Do not.

Heavy coats cause two problems. The obvious one is runs, which pool in the low spots and are visible from the outside forever. The less obvious one is weight, and it matters more here than on a 1/10 touring car: a Mini-Z body sits high above a very light chassis, so paint is mass added at the top. The routine:

Then the backing coat. Once the main color is dry and opaque, spray white or silver over the whole painted interior. It blocks light passing through the shell and makes the exterior color read brighter, because the color now sits on a reflective ground instead of a dark cavity. Skipping it is the most common reason a home-painted shell looks flat next to a factory one.

Let the shell cure overnight. PS paint feels dry in an hour and is not fully hard for considerably longer.

Trimming and Post Holes

Everything went well and now you have to cut it, which is where people get nervous and rightly so.

Trim along the molded trim line with curved scissors made for polycarbonate. Straight scissors handle the flat sections and fight you on the wheel arches. Cut a little wide on the first pass and come back to the line, because you cannot add material back.

Post holes are the last real hazard, and a common way to lose a body on the very last operation. Use a tapered hobby reamer, twisted slowly by hand, opening the hole in stages until the post drops through cleanly. Never use a drill bit: it grabs thin polycarbonate, walks off center, and cracks the shell radially from the hole.

Mount the shell dry first, mark the post locations from the inside with a fine pen, and confirm it sits level. If you are not certain the shell is even correct for your chassis, the body compatibility guide covers wheelbase and offset before you spend an evening painting the wrong body.

Peel the outer protective film off last.

Most of these are only recoverable by stripping, and stripping polycarbonate is more trouble than the shell is worth. Get the prep right and the rest is forgiving.
